Does ChatGPT Search the Web?
· ~8 min read
- Cites at least one source in 98.1% of answers
- About 7 citation slots per answer
- Responds to new content in days or weeks
- Zero citations, every time
- Names you only if the model already knows you
- Changes only when the model is updated
The content strategies that get brands cited by ChatGPT depend on a fact most AEO advice skips: ChatGPT searches the web for only about half of its answers. In BeNoticed's analysis of 2,804 ChatGPT API answers from September 2026, ChatGPT had web search available every time but used it in 1,456 answers (51.9%). The other 1,348 answers came from what the model already knew, and every one of them cited zero sources.
That changes what "publish good content and wait" can achieve. Great pages only help with the half of ChatGPT answers that involve a search. The other half depends on whether the model already knows your brand. So the winning approach isn't writing more and waiting. It's a plan for both ways into an answer, and a way to measure both.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT decides whether to search. It searched in 51.9% of answers. Claude (97.5%), Gemini (96.9%), Perplexity (100%) and Google AI Overviews (100%) almost always did.
- No search means no citation. 100% of ChatGPT's answers from memory cited nothing. Only 1.9% of its searched answers cited nothing.
- Citation slots are scarce. When ChatGPT searched, it cited about 7 sources per answer. Among equally relevant pages, the clearest, most specific one gets pulled in.
- ChatGPT reads a different web. For the same question, ChatGPT shares only about 5–6% of its cited sites with Gemini or Google AI Overviews.
- Reddit and YouTube barely register. ChatGPT cited reddit.com zero times in September, even though both platforms are major sources for Google AI Overviews.
- Measure mentions, not just citations. Citation tracking can't see answers that come from memory, which in our data was about half of ChatGPT's answers.
What data is this based on?
Everything in this article comes from BeNoticed's own tracking database. We ask AI engines the same buyer-style questions repeatedly and record what each one answers, whether it searched, and what it cites.
| Period | September 1–30, 2026 |
| Engines | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity (via API, web search enabled); Google AI Overviews (captured from live results) |
| Answers analyzed | 13,791 across all five engines; 2,804 from ChatGPT |
| Questions | 148 buyer-style questions, each asked repeatedly |
| Categories | B2B sales software, marketing technology, jobs and recruitment, payments, education, consumer products |
We only count answers that completed successfully. Google searches where no AI Overview appeared are excluded.
How often does ChatGPT search the web?
Source: BeNoticed tracking data · 13,791 answers · September 1–30, 2026
About half the time. Every engine had web search available on every call. ChatGPT used it on 1,456 of its 2,804 answers. For the other 1,348, it answered from memory alone. The other four engines searched almost every time, which makes ChatGPT the odd one out.
Why doesn't ChatGPT cite my website?
Source: BeNoticed tracking data · 2,804 ChatGPT answers · September 1–30, 2026
Often because it didn't search. The search decision is the whole story behind ChatGPT's citations. When it searched, it almost always credited sources. When it didn't, it never did. That explains ChatGPT's overall zero-citation rate of 49.1%: it is almost exactly the share of answers where it skipped search.
If your citation tracker shows ChatGPT ignoring you, check whether ChatGPT searched at all. A missing citation on a memory answer says nothing about your page. It says the model never looked.
How many sources does ChatGPT cite?
ChatGPT when it searched = its total citations divided by its searched answers; memory answers carried none. Claude and Perplexity excluded, see How we measured this.
Source: BeNoticed tracking data · September 1–30, 2026
About 7 when it searches, roughly the same as Gemini (8.3) and Google AI Overviews (7.0). Across all answers, including the ones from memory, ChatGPT averages just 3.9.
With only a handful of slots per answer, being relevant isn't enough. Your page has to be the clearest answer to the question: the one that states it plainly, with specific numbers, in the first two sentences.
We've left Perplexity out of this comparison. Our September collection counted every search result Perplexity returned, not only the ones it cited, so its figure isn't comparable. Our updated pipeline now records the two separately.
Does ChatGPT cite the same sources as Google?
0% = no sites in common, 100% = identical sources.

Rarely. All engines disagree a lot, but ChatGPT disagrees most. For a typical question, ChatGPT shares 4.9% of its cited sites with Gemini and 6.3% with Google AI Overviews. Google's two engines share 10.9% with each other.
The practical consequence: ranking well in Google AI Overviews tells you little about whether ChatGPT will cite you. Each engine has to be checked on its own terms.
Does Reddit help you show up in ChatGPT?
Source: BeNoticed tracking data · full dataset, December 2025 – September 2026
Not for citations. YouTube is the single biggest source for Google AI Overviews in our data, and Reddit is one of its top sources too. ChatGPT almost ignores both: in September alone, it cited reddit.com zero times.
A community-led content plan can work for Google's engines while doing nothing for ChatGPT's citations. Plan per engine, not per channel.
The two-door model: how a brand gets into a ChatGPT answer
A brand can get into a ChatGPT answer through two different doors, and they work on different clocks. BeNoticed calls this the two-door model.
| Door | How it works | Speed | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door 1: Live search | ChatGPT runs a web search, reads pages and cites them. In our data, 98.1% of searched answers cited at least one source. | Days to weeks | You can influence it directly: a page that is crawlable, indexed and clearly answers the question can be picked up quickly. |
| Door 2: Memory | ChatGPT answers from what it learned in training. No links, no citations. | Months | Your brand appears only if the model already associates you with the category. It changes when the model is updated, and you can't edit it directly. |
In September, ChatGPT used each door roughly half the time. Two consequences follow:
- Citation tracking misses about half of ChatGPT. A dashboard that only counts citations can't see memory answers at all.
- Brand mentions are the metric that spans both doors. ChatGPT mentioned a tracked brand in 23.95% of answers and recommended one in 10.28%, whether it searched or not.
How do I get my content cited by ChatGPT?
Keep writing, but stop waiting. Publishing on your own site and hoping ChatGPT notices only works on the search door, and only if ChatGPT can reach your pages. Here's the plan for both doors.
- Let ChatGPT's search crawler in. OpenAI states that sites that opt out of its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Check your robots.txt and any firewall or CDN bot settings, which can block it silently.
- Answer the question in the first two sentences. With about 7 citation slots per searched answer, the page that states the answer plainly, with specific numbers, is the easiest one to quote.
- Get covered where ChatGPT already looks. ChatGPT's citations lean toward editorial publishers and review sites, not community platforms. Across our full dataset, techradar.com alone took 2.59% of ChatGPT's citations to third-party sites, while reddit.com took 0.01% of all its citations. For ChatGPT, coverage in a respected publication in your category is worth more than a Reddit thread.
- Describe yourself the same way everywhere. Use one clear sentence for what you do and who it's for, on your site, directories, review sites, partner pages and press. Memory answers can only repeat what the model saw often enough to learn.
- Earn genuine mentions, not only links. Memory answers carry no links, so being named in credible text matters even without a backlink.
- Set your training-crawler policy on purpose. OpenAI uses a separate crawler, GPTBot, for content that may be used in model training. Blocking it doesn't affect search, but it does keep your content out of what future models learn.
- Measure both doors, over time. Track how often ChatGPT mentions and recommends your brand, not only how often it cites you, and ask the same questions many times: a single check only tells you which door ChatGPT happened to use. This is the job an AI visibility tracker does. BeNoticed runs your questions repeatedly across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and tracks where your brand is mentioned, recommended and cited versus competitors.
One honesty note: this is one month of data from 148 questions, measured through each engine's API. It's a strong signal, not a law of nature, which is exactly why we'll publish the same measurements every month.
What we don't know yet
- Why ChatGPT skips search. We know how often it skipped (48.1%), not which questions trigger a search. We're testing whether the choice is consistent per question or varies run to run.
- Whether the ChatGPT app behaves the same. We measured through OpenAI's API with web search available. The consumer ChatGPT app may search more or less often.
- How this changes over time. This is one month. We'll publish the same measurements monthly in the BeNoticed AI Citation Index.
- Whether it holds outside our categories. Our 148 questions cover six business categories. Others may show different rates.
How we measured this
- Collection. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity were queried through their APIs with web search available on every call; each model decided for itself whether to search. Google AI Overviews were captured from live search results. Models: ChatGPT: gpt-4o; Claude: claude-sonnet-4-6; Gemini: gemini-2.5-flash; Perplexity: sonar-pro.
- Sample. All successful answers completed September 1–30, 2026: 13,791 answers to 148 questions, each asked repeatedly. Google searches where no AI Overview appeared are excluded.
- Searched or not. An answer counts as searched when the API response shows the engine used its web search tool.
- Citations. Valid source links attached to an answer, grouped by domain without "www.". Claude and Perplexity are excluded from citation counts and overlap: our September collection didn't capture the sources Claude cited, and recorded all of Perplexity's search results rather than only the cited ones. Both are fixed for future months.
- Third-party sources. Where we name websites, we exclude the tracked brands' and their competitors' own sites, and we never name a tracked brand.
- Overlap. For each question, the share of cited domains two engines have in common (0% = none, 100% = identical), reported as the median across questions.
- Derived figure. ChatGPT's "about 7 sources per searched answer" is its total September citations divided by its searched answers, since memory answers carried no citations.
- Full-dataset figures. Site shares for Reddit, YouTube and techradar.com use BeNoticed's full dataset, December 2025 to September 2026.
FAQ
Does ChatGPT always search the web?
No. In BeNoticed's September 2026 data, ChatGPT had web search available on all 2,804 answers but used it on 51.9%. The other 48.1% were answered from the model's own knowledge.
Why didn't ChatGPT cite my website?
In our data, ChatGPT cited nothing at all when it didn't search, which was nearly half the time. When it did search, it cited about 7 sources per answer, so few pages make the cut. Check that OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, then make sure your page answers the question directly in its first two sentences.
How is ChatGPT different from Perplexity?
Perplexity searched the web on 100% of answers in BeNoticed's September 2026 data; ChatGPT searched on 51.9%. So Perplexity's answers almost always draw on live pages, while about half of ChatGPT's come from what the model already knows.
How many sources does ChatGPT cite?
About 7 per answer when it searches, similar to Gemini (8.3) and Google AI Overviews (7.0) in BeNoticed's September 2026 data. Across all answers, including those from memory, ChatGPT averaged 3.9.
Is creating content on my own site enough to appear in ChatGPT?
It helps only with the search door. Answers from memory reflect what the model learned from across the web, so consistent mentions on credible third-party sites matter too.
How do I get my website cited by ChatGPT?
First, make sure OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, can reach your pages, and answer the buyer's question in the first two sentences of the page. That covers the search door, which ChatGPT used in 51.9% of answers in BeNoticed's data. For the other half, build consistent mentions on credible third-party sites so the model learns to associate your brand with the category.
What is the difference between OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot?
OAI-SearchBot crawls pages for ChatGPT's search answers; OpenAI states that sites opting out of it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. The two are controlled separately in robots.txt.
How should I measure my ChatGPT visibility?
Track how often ChatGPT mentions and recommends your brand across many repeated runs of the same questions. Counting citations alone misses every answer ChatGPT gives from memory. AI visibility trackers such as BeNoticed run the same questions repeatedly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and record mentions, recommendations and citations over time.
