Tracking your brand in Google's AI Overviews depends on a fact most AEO dashboards hide: the Overview for the same question changes from one search to the next. In BeNoticed's September 2026 data, we ran 148 buyer questions through Google a median of 23 times each. Of the brands an AI Overview cited, 30.9% were missing the next time the same question was searched, even though an Overview appeared both times.

That changes what a one-off AI visibility check can tell you. Whether Google's AI cites you is a rate, not a yes or no. A single check can show you in on Monday and out on Thursday with nothing on your site changing. The useful measure is how often, across many runs.

    Key takeaways

    • Cited brands change run to run. 402 of 1,301 brand citations (30.9%) disappeared on the next search of the same question.
    • Most sources change too. 44.7% of all cited sites were gone on the next search.
    • Few sources make the cut. An AI Overview cited about 7 sources, close to ChatGPT when it searches.
    • YouTube is the biggest platform in the Overview. It took 14.78% of AI Overview citations in September. In ChatGPT it was 0.18%.
    • Gemini is a separate channel. For the same question, it shared a median 10.9% of cited sites with AI Overviews.
    • One check is a sample of one. Visibility in AI Overviews only means something measured across many runs.

What data is this based on?

Everything in this article comes from BeNoticed's own tracking database. We run the same buyer-style questions through Google repeatedly and record the AI Overview and every link it shows.

No. Across 2,172 pairs of back-to-back searches where an Overview appeared both times, 44.7% of the sites cited in the first search were gone in the second. For brands' own websites, it was 30.9%: 402 of 1,301.

Brands held on better than sites overall, but nearly 1 in 3 still dropped out. If your AI visibility report checks each question once, part of what it reports is chance. A drop on one check may be noise. A drop across many runs is a signal.

How many sources does an AI Overview cite?

About 7. Across 2,496 AI Overviews in September, Google cited 17,567 sources. That is close to ChatGPT when it searches (about 7.4, from our ChatGPT analysis) and Gemini (8.3).

With so few slots, and with those slots changing between searches, ranking on page one is not the same as being one of the 7.

YouTube, by a wide margin among the platforms we track: 14.78% of all AI Overview citations in September. Reddit took 2.61%. ChatGPT is almost the opposite: YouTube was 0.18% of its citations and Reddit 0.00%, as we also found in Does ChatGPT Search the Web?

Google's two AIs don't agree with each other either. For the same question, AI Overviews and Gemini shared a median 10.9% of cited sites. Winning in AI Overviews tells you little about Gemini, and the reverse.

The rate model: two numbers for AI Overview visibility

A brand's visibility in Google's AI Overviews comes down to two separate rates. BeNoticed calls this the rate model.

RateWhat it measuresIn our dataWhat it means for you
Presence rateHow often Google shows an AI Overview for your questionsOverviews appeared on 2,496 of 2,880 searches. We couldn't verify every remaining search in September (see What we don't know yet).Mostly out of your control. It tells you how much AI Overview visibility is even on the table.
Citation rateHow often you are cited when an Overview appears30.9% of cited brands were gone on the next searchThe one you can influence. Only meaningful across many runs.

    Two consequences follow:

    • "Not in the Overview" has two causes. No Overview appeared, or one appeared without you. They need different fixes.
    • Change only counts across runs. A one-check dashboard can't separate a real gain from a lucky draw.

How do I show up in Google AI Overviews?

Start with Google's own bar, then measure the right way.

    1. Clear Google's eligibility bar. Google states that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, with no additional technical requirements. Check that nosnippet or max-snippet rules aren't limiting key pages.
    2. Answer the question in the first two sentences. With about 7 sources per Overview, the page that states the answer plainly is the easiest one to use.
    3. Test YouTube on your top three buyer questions. It's the platform AI Overviews cite most in our data. A short video answering the same question gives you a second way in.
    4. Check Gemini separately. With a median 10.9% overlap, don't assume it follows AI Overviews.
    5. Track both rates, over many runs. Record how often an Overview appears and how often you're cited in it. This is the job an AI visibility tracker does. BeNoticed runs your questions repeatedly across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, and tracks where your brand is mentioned, recommended and cited versus competitors.

One honesty note: this is one month of data from 148 questions in two markets. It's a strong signal, not a law of nature, which is why we'll publish the same measurements every month.

    What we don't know yet

    • How often Google skips the Overview. 384 of 2,880 September searches recorded no AI Overview. Our September capture didn't save the page or confirm normal results had loaded, so we can't separate a true no-show from a capture problem. We've changed that, and will report the presence rate from October.
    • Why citations change between searches. We see how much they change, not what drives it.
    • Whether other markets behave the same. We captured from India and Mexico, desktop, logged out. Other countries, devices and signed-in users may differ.
    • How this changes over time. This is one month. We'll publish the same measurements monthly in the BeNoticed AI Citation Index.
    • AI Mode. Google's AI Mode is a separate surface and isn't covered here.

    How we measured this

    • Collection. Google AI Overviews were captured from live Google results pages, desktop and logged out. Each question was searched from the market of the organization tracking it: India (English) or Mexico (language not recorded in September). ChatGPT (gpt-4o) and Gemini (gemini-2.5-flash) were queried through their APIs with web search available.
    • Sample. 2,496 AI Overviews captured September 1–30, 2026, from 148 questions searched a median of 23 times each (minimum 5, maximum 29).
    • Run-to-run change. For back-to-back searches of the same question where an Overview appeared both times, the share of sites cited in the first that were not cited in the second. "Brands" means the own websites of tracked brands and their competitors, reported in aggregate only.
    • Citations. Links shown inside the AI Overview, grouped by domain without "www.".
    • Third-party sources. Where we name websites, we exclude tracked brands' and competitors' own sites, and we never name a tracked brand.
    • Overlap. For each question, the share of cited domains two engines have in common (0% = none, 100% = identical), reported as the median across questions. Same definition as our ChatGPT analysis.

    FAQ

Does Google's AI Overview change every time you search?

Often. In BeNoticed's September 2026 data, 30.9% of brands cited in a Google AI Overview were not cited the next time the same question was searched, and 44.7% of all cited sites changed.

Does Google always show an AI Overview?

No. Google says AI Overviews appear only when its systems judge them additive to classic Search. In BeNoticed's September 2026 data, an Overview was captured on 2,496 of 2,880 searches; we are verifying the rest with an improved capture method.

Is Google AI Overview the same as Gemini?

No. For the same question, AI Overviews and Gemini shared a median 10.9% of cited sites in BeNoticed's September 2026 data.

How many sources does a Google AI Overview cite?

About 7 per Overview in BeNoticed's September 2026 data, similar to ChatGPT when it searches (about 7.4) and Gemini (8.3).

What does Google's AI Overview cite most?

In BeNoticed's September 2026 data, YouTube was 14.78% of AI Overview citations, the largest single platform we track. Reddit was 2.61%.

How do I get my website into Google AI Overviews?

Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, with no additional technical requirements. Beyond that, answer the buyer's question in the first two sentences of the page, and consider a YouTube video on the same question, since YouTube is the platform AI Overviews cited most in our data.

How should I measure my visibility in Google AI Overviews?

Track two rates across many repeated runs of the same questions: how often an AI Overview appears, and how often your site is cited when it does. A single check can't separate a real change from run-to-run noise. AI visibility trackers such as BeNoticed run the same questions repeatedly across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity and record both over time.
